Defunktion began as a space to exhibit art of any and all disciplines through monthly exhibitions, and has grown to encompass written features by selected contributors, interviews with established designers, artists and musicans, weekly editorials and a permanent and constantly growing exhibition entitled Wallpaper.

At the core of the site are the exhibition spaces. Every month, new and established artists exhibit a selection of their pieces; exhibitions have covered a variety of media including motion, audio, textual and visual.

Defunktion's weekly editorial presents a hand-picked selection of recommendations focusing on new designers, interesting websites, exciting new music and pieces of interest. Complementing the editorial and exhibition spaces is a constantly growing archive of interviews with creatives from around the world; amongst those currently featured on the site include Yann Martel, Booker Prize winning author of Life Of Pi, Florian Schmitt of Hi-Res! and video-game designer Masaya Matsuura. In late 2003 Defunktion also recorded an exclusive In Conversation session between celebrated designers Malcolm Garrett and Peter Saville.

Since its launch in May 2003, Defunktion has focused on presenting the most exciting and original music available to our readers. From live sets to promo compilations, via the site we have released exclusive recordings from a diverse range of artists and labels including: Daedelus (tigerbeat6 / eastern developments), Thought Universe (Skam / Struktur), Ninja Tune, Pedro (melodic), Rumpistol (Rump Recordings) and Big Dada.

Due to the constant influx of new music sent to Defunktion, in September of 2003 Defunkt Media was launched as an umbrella site for Defunktion itself and other projects associated with the Defunkt Media team. The first audio release by UK based producer Batfinks, entitled Foogle in Love, is available for download only on Defunkt Media. A new EP by jazz-electronica artist Kid Mingus was released on Defunktion in November 2004, followed closely by the launch of the Kid Mingus mini-site - also exclusive to Defunkt Media.

Defunktion is a nonprofit organisation setup to encourage artists worldwide; to discover original media; and to build a creative and collaborative artistic community.

Defunktion Season 1 began in May 2003 and ended September 1st. Every month for the duration of Season 1, Defunktion picked two different artists, musicians or designers to exhibit original works in their own section of the Defunktion website.
Due to the dynamic nature of the exhibitions - work would be uploaded every two to three days - the online exhibition spaces were named Data-piles.

In October 2003, Defunktion Season 2 began - a new selection of exciting artists, musicians, designers and photographers were selected for one month residencies to take part in their own Data-Pile Exhibition.

Defunktion's third Season launched in April 2004. With the new Season came a series of original exhibitions, interviews, music and the addition of a Features section, containing written pieces by selected contributors. The Season ended in a celebration of all things illustrative, featuring an exclusive label showcase from urban lifestyle collective LMAC.tv.

November 2004 brought about the launch of Defunktion Season 4 - a refined design and navigation gave visitors faster access to every aspect of the site - bursting with content, archived from the previous three Seasons and yet more music and media made available every single month.

Defunkt Media in conjunction with Defunktion is proud to present our first permanent exhibition, entitled Wallpaper - featuring work by graphic designer and illustrator Bart Van de Vel.

The popular culture references are frequent and appreciated in Bart's work, (this can only be expected from someone who sites his influences as mostly cinema, comics, tattoo-art, grafitti and cartoons) so the idea of having an ongoing exhibition that presents pieces for the viewer to actually make use of in everyday life was one that appealed greatly to Defunktion.

Every piece on display in this exhibition can be downloaded and used as a desktop wallpaper for your computer. If you like a piece - take it.

In this mini-site for Manchester, UK based Kid Mingus you'll find a download of his second ep - Unhappy House, exclusive to Defunkt Media.

The rainy city's melancholy atmosphere combines with Mingus' mastery of underspoken melody; fusing jazz, hiphop and ambience into a somber and fluid mass, this mini-album from Kid Mingus sees his self-defined "Miserable Disco" genre furthered.

Encompassing clothing, music, toys and design into a coherent, colourful and cute collective; LMAC.tv showcase a selection of their finest creations in this exclusive mini-site exhibition.

Expect eccentric oddballs and small nonsensical beasts scampering over your optic nerves, we also suggest listening to Le Messie's Candy ep on the Audio Streamer for the full LMAC experience.

Andreas Nilsen is Normal Natural, graphic designer and musician. Nilsen's creations flow and swell within themselves, leading from image to image, chorus to verse, track to track upon a wave of gentle organic rhythms and scenes. Images and audio that initially are repetetive but slyly give way to satisfaction and subtle unpredictability.

There is nothing plain, ordinary or normal about Nilsen, maybe Exceptional Natural would be a more fitting pseudonym. Regardless of moniker, we hope you enjoy this mini-site.
